Process of work:
Finished Piece:
Using the silver leaf, reflections:
- It was more messy and crumbled more than expected.
- By using a brush to press the leaf onto the plaster meant the leaf stuck to the brush and my fingers due to the acrylic glue I had to put on first, next time i'll try a smaller brush.
- Compared to spray paint it didn't give the exact impression of the surface underneath and was quite difficult to get the leaf to mould the texture I'd created with the plaster.
- Compared to my spray paint pieces, it looks much more shiny and this is what I wanted to create. As I was making the piece I got multiple people walk by and admire its shininess - thus conforming with the consumer and consumed aspect I wanted to exploit.
- The red plaster underneath which is exposed slightly works well to create this contrast with the world of consumerism, e.g. sale stickers which are predominately red, and some shipping information such as 'fragile' or 'documents enclosed' which are also red.
Developments
- Overall, I'm really happy with the look of the leaf and will continue with it, perhaps next time I will consider not using plaster as a base for the leaf though, instead i'll experiment with acrylic paint or something more non-porous.
- I will buy real silver leaf rather than imitation silver next time, as I want to focus on adding real value to the work rather than just intended value.
Adding Varnish
- This clear vanish did not work and ruined the piece slightly as it has dulled out some areas, and left greenish marks. Next time get a better metal varnish!
