Reflective Log: Documents of Contemporary Art - Materiality Petra Lange-Berndt

Petra Lange-Berndt, Materiality, (London: Whitechapel Gallery, 2015).
Key Points:

  • This book consists of multiple essays by different people, around the subject of materiality.
  • 'considering material as the essentialised basis of medium specificity—and technically based approaches in art history reinforced connoisseurship through the science of artistic materials.'
  • Essays that may be of use:
  • Monika Wagner 'Material//2001' pp.26- 30
  • 'Antony Gormley, In conversation wih James Putnam //2004 pp.30-31
  • Ester Leslie 'Volatile, Liquid, Crystal//2015' pp.62-65
  • Ilya Kabakov, 'On Garbage: In conversation with Boris Groys//1995 pp.110-113
  • The book explores the range and depth of the material.
  • Material as an aesthetic category.
  • 'The substances and objects that constitute material are subject to transformation through processing, and hence they may reveal information about the forces of production at the time, or specific historical technique.' p26
  • 'material is the stuff which provides the parent substance for artistic creation'.
  • material connects to antiquity - does this add value?
Further research:
  • Process art, process artists
  • Theorist Jean-Francois Lyotard
Reflections and links to my research:
  • The book explores pushing a material to its limits, exploring through this way of research.
  • Links to my aluminium - the process of heating, annealing and moulding will allow the material to transform.
  • The first text by Monika Wagner proves slightly less helpful than I thought, as it delves into information technology - a topic that doesn't apply to me.
  • This book would be a good point for future research if I were to read other chapters.
